collect seed

collect seed

Don't let the moment pass you buy, a dry October day is a good time to gather seed before winter turns your favourite plants to mush. Like popcorn, Amaranthus seeds can be eaten,  toasted.

My young nephew clearly enjoys expressing himself artistically with a sharp knife, but even without his skills, its easy to make simple autumnal arrangements in your garden, even if its just lining up fallen fruit on a bench.

Have a bit of subtle garden fun! Lime green globes of Hydrangea aborescens 'Annabelle,'  Buxus and a bird ball brings a gentle smile to a shady corner.

celebrate your harvest

celebrate your harvest

It seems a shame to eat your home grown harvest, but a waste not to! Snap it before munching it and record it for posterity. Or why not commit to canvas! (This is my 1st attempt at oils... anyone want their carrot's likeness done?)

High potash feed is what they need, don't harvest 'til frosts threaten. When cutting, give them a few cms of stem for handling, then wash in water with a dash of bleach and hang to dry - for 6 months or more!
late stake

late stake

Mid summer drought and your hollyhocks and verbascum are about to hit the turf? Soaking the ground half an hour before you stake will make it easier. Tie each stem individually to bamboo poles.

Its like being able to wander through Chelsea Show Gardens. If you find yourself in the Loire Valley in France, don't miss a chance to explore this joyous celebration of chic, excentric garden style.

Snap colourful ideas, like this, on holiday. Match your front door paint with  kitchy annuals. Very Doris Day.
